In October 2022, the Te Hiringa Hauora | Health Promotion Agency Alcohol team commissioned Pacific engagement provider Bluespur Consulting Limited to support work with the Pacific alcohol sector and community. This work is focused on alcohol harm minimisation for Pacific peoples.

The two main objectives of the engagement were to connect with stakeholders and community, and to better understand the communities' experience of alcohol harm.

Engagement events took place nationwide from November 2022 to January 2023 and included. There were 13 in total, including:

  • 4 sector fono in Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch and Dunedin
  • 9 focus groups with community
  • a total of 70 participants, including representatives from 40 organisations from the Alcohol, Pasifika community groups and Other Drugs (AOD) sector.

This subsequent report, titled Alcohol harm has no place in our culture, presents insights and recommendations for improving equity for Pacific peoples from an alcohol harm perspective. The premise of the engagement was to centre the voice, values and aspirations of Pacific peoples in Aotearoa New Zealand.

This publication is the next phase of the team's Alcohol Harm Minimisation work programme with the development of a Pacific Alcohol Harm Minimisation Strategy.
